Lucien de Wit, LuBa Fresh:

"Limited air freight availability is severely hindering Egyptian strawberry season"

The Egyptian strawberry season has begun anew at LubaFresh in the Netherlands. "We have air freight arrivals three times a week in the coming period. Normally we get them until early January," Lucien de Wit says. Currently, the importer carries the Fortuna and Sensation varieties.

Cargo space is a challenge this year. "It's tough to get a place on cargo flights. There's limited availability to Europe. The rates are also sky-high. That's due to the whole international transport situation."

So, it is hard to do a season outlook, says Lucien. "The harvest forecast is similar to previous years in Egypt. However, the expected export volume is difficult to estimate at present. That's because of the global problem of getting available cargo to airlines," he concludes.
