Canada approves a Systems Approach for Chilean stone fruit to enter British Columbia

The negotiation process between the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) of Canada ended in the approval of a Systems Approach for Chilean stone fruit exports to the Canadian province of British Columbia. The Systems Approach is an alternative measure to fumigation with methyl bromide to mitigate the risk of Cydia molesta from arriving in the country.

The SAG has already issued the document that establishes the different general measures and measures at the farms, packers, and phytosanitary inspection methods that will be used in the certification process to deliver the appropriate level of phytosanitary security against Cydia molesta.

The protocol will apply to the following species:

Peach (Prunus persica).
Nectarine (Prunus persica var. Nectarine).
Plum (Prunus domestica, Prunus salicina).
Plumcot or Pluot (Prunus domestica x Prunus armeniaca).
Damascus (Prunus armeniaca).

In addition, shipments of these species must comply with the phytosanitary requirements described in the document “Measures to mitigate the risk of Lobesia botrana (EGVM) in regulated species for Canada with Systems Approach ” to prevent this pest from entering the country.
