According to forecasts from the Agro-Export Management of the Exporters Association (ADEX), ginger will be one of the ten main products of the Peruvian agro-export basket this year, thanks to higher demand from markets, such as the United States and the Netherlands.
Last year, ginger ranked 12th with shipments worth 104,719,000 dollars, registering a growth of 155%.
It was shipped to Spain, Canada, Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Chile, South Korea, Colombia, Sweden, Ukraine, the United States, and the Netherlands.
The central manager of Exports of the business union, Ysabel Segura, spoke about the importance of promoting the ginger production chain through a joint effort between the public and private sectors to strengthen crops and local and international marketing. “The union will allow positioning our ginger in other destinations. Today it enjoys great recognition and the figures support it: between 2012 and 2020 its shipments to the world went from almost 4 million dollars to more than 104 million,” she stated in the Ginger Week 2021, an online event organized Elisur Organic, a company associated to ADEX.
Potential
The director of Promotion and Commercial Articulation of Selva de Sierra and Selva Exportadora, Victor Sarabia, said that the world's ginger market was valued at more than 5 billion dollars in 2019 and that, according to a study, it would reach 8 billion dollars in 2027.
The specialist in Plant Health of the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), Hector Riveros, highlighted the special and differentiated treatment that the national producers gave to this product, as in China sowing and harvesting are performed with mechanized systems to reduce costs and achieve efficiency in the rotation of the earth. “This cultivation has become quite widespread and the actors are handling it well. Peru has the optimal temperature, humidity, and soil conditions; however, as the areas increase, so do the pests. Senasa's work is aimed at identifying and eliminating these pests,” he emphasized.
According to Elisur Organic's field manager, Luis Angulo, the Peruvian ginger has an intermediate size compared to China and Brazil. In addition, it has a better appearance and is more attractive; its color is more yellowish, which provides a greater degree of spiciness and acidity. "Our ginger's organoleptic characteristics are due to our agroclimatic characteristics, such as soils, temperature, and altitude," he stated.
It's worth noting that Peru is the third biggest exporter of ginger in the world.
