Bertus Schipper (Zoutewelle):

"In the Netherlands, you can hardly sell grapes with seeds on the open market, but ethnic customers don't want anything else"

Grape sales have been going well in recent weeks. "The Italian season started with fairly high prices, as is traditional, but we're now at a somewhat more stable level," says Bertus Schipper of Zoutewelle. "Sales continue to be good. We are not overloaded and therefore we can continue to sell well. The relatively cool weather undoubtedly contributes to this, as the melon market, for instance, is under considerable pressure."

"The price of the Italian grapes is around 2.20 Euro for Victoria and Black Magic and the red grapes with pips (Red Magic/Red Globe) are also doing remarkably well with prices around 2.60 Euro. It is currently 35 degrees and warmer in Sicily and this has certainly contributed to the flavour and colouring of the grapes. The supply from Sicily is not huge. From next week onwards, we will start with the first grapes from Puglia, including our own brand Lino", continues the importer.

"We also imported some containers of grapes from Egypt. The prices were around 1.20 euros for the packaged grapes and 10 euros for the loose grapes (4.5) kilos, which is good money for Egypt. In the meantime I see the first Spanish grapes arriving on the market here and there."

When it comes to Italian grapes, Zoutewelle focuses as always on the grapes with seeds, although Bertus is trying to continuously stock seedless grapes this year as well. "In the Netherlands, seeded grapes are hardly sold on the open market anymore, but ethnic customers don't want anything else," concludes Schipper.
