Escuinapa's 2021 mango season has already started and it's marked by drought. The fruit has not reached export sizes, exceeding 400 g, due to the lack of water for irrigation. As a result, producers from this municipality of Sinaloa have had to sell their production to the industry, which pays them a lower price, which currently stands at nearly 50 cents.
According to Rogelio Padilla Salcido, a leader of the CNC in Escuinapa, only nearly 2,000 of the 13,000 hectares destined for mango production in the region have had a good product because they are located in irrigation areas of the Agustina Ramirez dam or have deep wells.
The areas most affected by the drought in the municipality are Tecualilla, Palmilla, La Campana, and the Grande Creek area.
“We started the 2021 mango season with the Ataulfo variety and high prices that stood at 8 to 5 pesos per kilo. The price of Haden started at 4 pesos per kilo and is now at 3 pesos. The Tommy started at 3 pesos with 50 cents a kilo, but it went down to 2 pesos," he stated. "It has been a very difficult season because the first three varieties did not achieve good sizes and prices are going down."
However, Padilla said they expected that the sizes of the Kent and Keitt varieties would improve because of the rains there have been in recent days in the municipality. "We are hopeful the season can improve if the rains continue, as the predominant mango variety grown in Escuinapa is the Keitt variety, which accounts for up to 70% of the production," he said.
