Kiwifruit grove saved from the late frost thanks to a combination of three factors

After the drastic drop in temperatures and frost that destroyed many crops all over the peninsula, there is some positive news from those growers who employ innovative cover systems such as Christian Schwarzer from the Treviso province.

"Over one hectare of golden kiwis was spared from the late frost thanks to a combination of three factors: Polyfilm-Ultra covers from Retilplast, a central ventilation corridor adjustable depending on the weather and anti-frost irrigation over the canopy. While the outside temperature plummeted to -°C, we registered -0-5°C inside the structure."

"I admit I feared that the films would not withstand the weight of the ice, but my worries soon vanished and I realized how these films are truly exceptional not only against the rain and to improve plant growth. Plants are in excellent state, with extraordinary blossoming and vegetation. The grove is rather young and has not yet entered full production."

"If you want to grow high-quality fruit, covering plants is the way to go. New insects, diseases and late frost are increasingly frequent and are putting us growers to the test. What is more, the mission of the EU is that of reducing the use of plant protection products and, under the films, plants definitely needs fewer interventions."

Red and golden kiwifruits are in demand thanks to their excellent flavor and high nutritional content. However, as plants are subject to bacterioris, they must be protected from the rain with solutions supported by tensile structures or iron arches.
