Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced to run three Kisan Rail trains up to Agartala in the next two days. The goal is to show its support for transportation of North Bengal potatoes to other parts of the northeast including Tripura.
According to the NFR schedule, a train will run from Falakata to Agartala, one from Dhupguri to Agartala and another will run from Chengrabandha to Agartala. Every year, potato produced in North Bengal sold at a minimum price during March-April because of the inadequacy of stock in cold storages. Meanwhile, potatoes are sold at Rs 20 in Agartala markets where local production is very low.
Tripura is depending on the supply of potato from West Bengal and Punjab and the price in the retail market rose during the monsoon due to transportation problems. Before this there was no dedicated train for transporting vegetables to Tripura, but the Ministry of Railway from this year decided to run a special Kishan Rail, which would be beneficial for the states.
