The Peruvian fig season is in full swing at Frutos Tropicales Europe (FTE) in the Netherlands. This overseas importer focuses mainly on importing mangos, avocados, limes, and ginger. But it's also well-involved in the imported fig season. "We receive between 50 and 80 airplane pallets a week. That makes us the largest importer of this exotic from Peru," says Julio Antelo.
According to Julio, the period in the runup to the festive season is perfect for importing blue figs. "Demand increases annually. More and more recipes use figs. That makes it very attractive to supermarkets. We sell this product throughout Europe. Germany is the most important market."
"We receive all our figs via airfreight. That's from our partner, La Kiarita, in Peru. These aren't only GlobalGAP and Grasp certified. They also have Smeta certification. We work with only one variety, the Toro Sentado. This blue fig variety has a distinctive flavor compared to Brazilian figs," concludes Julio.
At FTE, the fig season lasts until week 14. The importer offers this product in punnets in sizes 15 to 24.
