The Tunisian seedless pomegranate was introduced into China in the late 1990's. This excellent pomegranate variety is characterized by soft, edible seeds. The pomegranate is large (up to 1,100 grams) and juicy (up to 92.6%). The Tunisian seedless pomegranate variety flourished in the natural environment of Chinese production areas.
Farmers in Hebei were the first to cultivate this new pomegranate variety, and farmers in Anhui, Shandong, Jiangxi, and Hunan quickly followed. There are production areas across China that now produce Tunisian seedless pomegranates, and have been doing so for several decades. The Tunisian seedless is by far the best pomegranate variety on the Chinese market. The oldest pomegranate trees of this variety are already more than 20 years old, but China only began to produce the Tunisian seedless pomegranate in large volumes in 2002. After almost two decades of continuous expansion of the surface area devoted to pomegranate plantation, the Tunisian seedless is now the driving force behind the Chinese pomegranate market.
The Tunisian seedless pomegranate has always been very popular in the Chinese market. Only last year did the market conditions worsen. There were large volumes of unmarketable pomegranates. The main reason behind this situation was the rapid expansion of the overall production volume. The pomegranates from various production areas entered the market at the same time and in large volumes. Market competition is growing fierce. Top-quality pomegranates gradually squeeze out the medium-quality pomegranates, which eventually became unmarketable. Many pomegranate farmers suffered financial losses. In the end they had to leave their pomegranates to rot in the orchards. They could not even recover the cost price.
This event left an impression in the hearts of pomegranate farmers across China. Many of them were still nervous when they brought their pomegranates to the market this year. However, the market conditions are quite good this year. Farmers can put their minds at ease. The Tunisian seedless pomegranates currently on the market sell for around 12 yuan [1.76 USD] per 0.5 kg, and in the cities for as much as 18 yuan [2.63 USD] per 0.5 kg. The purchase price of top-quality pomegranates is as much as 3 yuan [0.44 USD] per 0.5 kg.
