Chinese passion fruit is as cheap as cabbage, but buyers are still hesitant

Passion fruit has already entered the market in south China. The harvest season is still ongoing. When the passion fruit entered the market, the fruit immediately encountered sales difficulties. The main production areas of passion fruit are in Hainan, Guangxi, and Yunnan. The prices there quickly dropped and remained low. There are many different reasons for this development. Sales conditions have always been quite good in recent years and passion fruit is easy to grow, so many farmers shifted to passion fruit plantation. The fruit quickly became the main product in many production areas.

When the passion fruit began to enter the market in large volumes, the price dropped. The price of passion fruit in Fengqing county in Yunnan is as low as the price of cabbages. The latest data shows that the purchase price of Chinese passion fruit is around 1.5 yuan [0.22 USD] per 0.5 kg. This is even lower than the price for green vegetables. According to farmers in Fengqing, more than 140 thousand kg of passion fruit already entered the market. Buyers are hesitant. They prefer to wait and see how the price will develop.

The low price of passion fruit is also closely intertwined with the general economic environment. The outbreak of Covid-19 severely impacted the Chinese market this year. Many products suffer from sales difficulties. The purchase volume was greatly reduced. Combined with the rapid expansion of passion fruit production in recent years, the market quickly developed a situation where supply exceeded demand. The price naturally dropped. Furthermore, the flavor of passion fruit is somewhat sour and many consumers can not get used to this flavor. That is another reason why passion fruit does not sell well at the moment.
