Andre van der Horst, Exotimex:

"Finally more supply of young Thai coconuts on an empty market"

The supply of young coconuts from Thailand has been very limited in recent weeks. "The production was very low, which meant that only very limited numbers were available for extremely high prices," explains Andre van der Horst of Exotimex Europe from Rijnsburg.

The importer received larger volumes again last week and this week for the first time in a long time. "We are very happy with that, because there is good demand from our customers. The market is now slowly starting up again. It was completely empty, but this will change in the coming weeks. The supply from Thailand is also at level."

Although the prices of the young coconuts, which are characterised by their classic diamond shape, are high due to the limited supply, the Corona measures are creating uncertainties in sales. "Young coconuts are really a festival product. Of course those events are not going ahead this year, so we are missing that market. Fortunately, the catering industry is starting up nicely again, because that demand was sharply reduced in the initial period."
