Coronavirus does not stop the development of new potato varieties in Peru

The trials for the production of new potato varieties that are being carried out in the department of La Libertad have not stopped despite the spread of the pandemic in Peru. The adoption of biosecurity measures and intelligent social distancing has allowed guaranteeing the safety of farmers and technicians during the trials. The crops of the three projects that are being carried out in the rural districts of Curgos, Julcan, and Pataz are ready for harvest.

The main goal of these projects is to develop potato varieties that have a higher content of iron and zinc to improve the nutrition of the families in the area, especially of the children. Another objective is to have varieties that are suitable for industrial processing.

This joint initiative was developed by the International Potato Center (CIP), Minera Poderosa, the Asociacion Pataz NGO, and farmers in northern Peru.
