"High prices and substantial shortages on ginger market"

Due to the coronavirus, ginger supply from China is considerably delayed. “There is currently very little Chinese ginger available due to the virus. The production is a lot lower than normal, so there aren't many containers on the way to Europe, "says Sophie Ye from KX Food. “Due to the low supply that is expected to continue for weeks, the prices for Chinese ginger are at a very high level. The prices have doubled compared to three weeks ago."

Apart from the ginger from China, KX Food also offers products from Peru and Brazil, but there is also a limited supply from those countries. “Currently, there is little ginger in the market in the countries with the highest production, while this time of year is one of the peak consumption times. The ginger that we have been receiving in recent weeks is of high quality, "says Sophie.

"The sale of sweet potato and turmeric, on the other hand, has had little trouble with the turbulent situation on the market and is thus stable."
