Pierre Sweep:

"High prices and short supply on the celeriac market"

Like many other open ground vegetables the celeriac has been making good prices this year. "Between 70 and 80 cents is being paid to the grower," says Pierre Sweep of A&P Sweep from Zevenbergen. The high prices aren't restricting the sales so far, according to the trader. "There are no holds on it. That's the great thing about our country. If there are shortages, people always find their way there."

"There are some destinations further away that are buying less due to the high prices, but we are seeing the number of customers increase. And the demand is very varied: from Germany, Serbia, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Hungary, to Scandinavia and the United Kingdom," according to the open ground vegetable trader.

"Of course, the high prices are fantastic for the growers, although I think it's a shame that the celeriac market always has to have huge ups and downs. You can bet that this market situation will lead to an extreme reaction," says Pierre, who expects the new harvest won't start very early.

The stocks are already declining to a low level. "We built up a good quality together with our growers and this means there aren't any quality problems so far. Furthermore, due to contracts we are sending celeriac to the industry which is actually too good for that, but it's all in the game!"
