Exports of citrus fruits from Uruguay decreased significantly

In recent years, exports of citrus fruits from Uruguay, namely oranges, lemons, grapefruit and tangerines, have declined significantly. Exports of citrus fruits from Uruguay decreased by 14.6%, and at the same time there was a decrease in average prices for citrus exports by 9.5%.

Last season, 85% of all citrus shipments from Uruguay accounted for 3 major markets: 37% - the EU market, 35% - in the US and 12% - in Brazil.

According to Cibils-Soto consultants M. Soto, as a result of the opening of the US market in 2013, all preferences in trade with the European Union were lost, where higher trade duties came into force. “The high profitability of the citrus sector will be only in the presence of active exports. As a result, today Uruguay is looking for new markets for products,” the expert told a-ipp.ru.
