Peru: Carriers reach an agreement with the Government

The cargo transporters guilds that held a strike and blocked roads in some regions of the interior of Peru decided to put an end to their protest after reaching an agreement with the Government, reported the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) on Sunday.

Through a press release, the president of the Council of Ministers, Cesar Villanueva, stressed that the agreement that ended the six-day strike was achieved on Saturday night.

The strike, which presented a greater intensity in the regions of Arequipa, Ancash, Piura and Lambayeque, demanded the reduction of the price of fuel, the reduction or elimination of some tolls, as well as an amnesty to their fines.

The agreement achieved by the union leaders and representatives of the Government consists of a reduction of 0.59 soles (about 0.17 dollars) per gallon of diesel in plant, by the state company Petroperu.

It also involves the expedition of the approval of a bill that establishes the return of 0.80 soles (about 0.25 dollars) per gallon of diesel, an initiative that is pending approval in the Peruvian Parliament.

In addition, the government agreed to suspend the payment of the Yauca toll, located in the Arequipa region, for five months or until 70% of the road is restored, and also to evaluate the state of the road in the Atico area (Arequipa).

Furthermore, the educational period of the obligation to have a GPS will be extended, so the Ministry of Transport and Communications will notify the carriers that have incurred in a fault without establishing a financial penalty, and they will hold meetings to arrange the implementation of an electronic speed control system.
