Ecuador: Authorities find 149 kg of cocaine hidden in bananas destined for Belgium

Authorities found 150 packages of cocaine weighing 149 kilos in a container loaded with bananas. The operation was executed on Sunday, September 16, at the port terminal of Guayaquil.

The drug was not among the bananas that were going to be exported, but it was smuggled in a double bottom of the metal structure. The weight of the freight was one of the factors that raised alarm and a trained dog found the drug.

Julio Guerron, the zonal subrogate chief of Counternarcotics, said that the shipment was going to be shipped from Guayaquil to Spain and then to Antwerp (Belgium).

A citizen, who is allegedly responsible for the shipping company that was exporting the fruit to Europe, was detained in the operation. During 2018, authorities have seized eight tons of drugs in the ports of the city.
