A peek at yesterday’s New York Produce Show

Baby, it was cold outside but it was definitely warm inside the Javits Center yesterday, which was home to the annual New York Produce Show & Conference. The one-day trade show featured some 300 exhibitors from across the country's produce industry to talk shop for a day or two but to also stay in New York to experience the magic of holidays.

While the temperature was warm inside the center, the warmth also extended to the show attendees, some of whom have known each other and worked together for decades. However, while that was a draw for some, others found it challenging at times and found it tricky to break in and find new contacts or even mix and mingle at some of the show's surrounding events, which included an opening cocktail reception, a keynote breakfast and more.

That's not how all exhibitors felt though. Blue River Legacy Farms for example was a first time exhibitor at the show and felt it was a good chance to connect with those in the industry. "We're here to try and build relationships–it's a huge market so why not be here," says the company's Brek Burgweger.

Some exhibitors also continued to enjoy the more intimate nature of this show, particularly following other more recent large scale produce shows.

Product-wise, it was hard to miss the increased presence of grab and go bag options at many booths. While there was an abundance of bagged fruit such as apples, pears and citrus items, also spotted was bagged squash–an item that historically has not been found in bags.
