Salmonella concerns prompt Canada warning on Iranian pistachios

Canadian health authorities are advising consumers to avoid pistachios from Iran and products made with pistachios from Iran following an ongoing Salmonella outbreak linked to several brands of pistachio nuts and pistachio-containing items.

The Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and Health Canada report that the advisory is connected to recalls issued for various pistachio products. Consumers are encouraged to consult the CFIA's Food Safety Investigation page to determine whether products in their homes match any recall notices. Pistachios have a long shelf life, so items purchased months earlier may still be stored in kitchens or pantries.

Authorities recommend checking brand names, product sizes, UPCs, and production codes against current recall listings. Recalled pistachios and pistachio-containing products should not be consumed or used in cooking, as heating may not eliminate Salmonella. Items included in recalls should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.

For pistachio products not subject to a recall, consumers are advised to review labels for the country of origin. Pistachios from countries other than Iran are not part of the advisory. If the origin cannot be confirmed, or if the product contains pistachios from Iran, health authorities advise avoiding consumption. Many processed items do not specify the origin of each ingredient, meaning pistachios used in manufacturing may differ from the country where the final product was made.

Consumers can find updated outbreak information on PHAC's public health notice page and may sign up for recall notifications by email. Suspected food safety issues can be reported directly to the CFIA.
