Moldova and Ukraine walnut exports to EU remain unchanged

Moldova exported nearly 2,500 tonnes of walnut kernels to the European Union from January to October 2025, essentially unchanged from the previous year, according to Logos Press. This volume ranks Moldova fifth among EU walnut kernel suppliers, behind Ukraine (13,870 tonnes), Chile (17,140 tonnes), China (24,140 tonnes), and the United States (54,950 tonnes).

Overall, EU imports of walnut kernels rose 12.1% year-on-year, reaching 116,500 tonnes, driven primarily by a 269% surge in imports from China. In contrast, U.S. shipments fell 14.7%, while exports from Ukraine and Moldova stagnated, decreasing slightly by 0.9% and 0.6%, respectively.

According to the Moldovan Walnut Growers Association (ANRN), the bulk of Moldova's EU exports comes from the 2024 harvest, though exporters have already shipped hundreds of tonnes from the 2025 crop. Fresh walnuts are also being sent to Turkey, the country's second-largest market.

ANRN representatives note that low stock levels from last year motivated early-season exports, while the main challenge for the new marketing season is the expected increase in 2025 walnut production in several net-exporting countries.
