The Belarusian government has implemented new mandatory size requirements for potatoes supplied under the state procurement program, following public complaints earlier this year about small potatoes being sold in retail outlets.
According to a resolution signed by Prime Minister Alyaksandr Turchyn, the state standard (GOST) for table potatoes has been revised, and new requirements have also been established for apples sold in retail stores. The resolution further adjusts the timelines for setting prices for fruit and vegetable products and for concluding supply contracts.
The document also increases the volumes of potatoes, fresh white cabbage, beets, carrots, and onions to be supplied from stabilization funds for national needs during the 2025/2026 off-season. These volumes will vary by region, based on local yields and higher sales levels.
The Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade (MART) stated that the permissible size range for potatoes intended for sale is now between 45 mm and 80 mm, compared to the previous range of 35 mm to 80 mm.
