Honduran Colada Royale pineapple wins award at IFPA Global Produce and Floral Show

The Colada Royale pineapple, created by Dole Food Company in La Ceiba, was named the top promoted product at the IFPA Global Produce and Floral Show 2025 in Anaheim, California, showcasing Honduras' agricultural innovation.

The fruit, developed over 15 years of research and breeding, features natural hints of pineapple and coconut. Its unique flavor and enhanced nutritional profile drew the attention of the jury and attendees.

The variety was developed by Honduran plant breeder Roberto Young, who has worked with Dole since 1997. "As a pineapple breeder, much of my work is done quietly. It takes over ten years to develop a new variety, and only a few reach the market. Colada Royale is particularly meaningful: It will be my legacy," the scientist stated after receiving the award.

Colada Royale, a variety of Ananas comosus, has cream-coloured flesh and a taste reminiscent of piƱa colada, with no additives. According to the company, it has 2.5 times more vitamin B6 than other commercial varieties, a key nutrient for metabolism and haemoglobin production.

Dole announced that, as part of its social responsibility program, it will allocate part of the profits from this new variety to build a community center in La Ceiba. The center will offer medical care, job training, and language classes for agricultural workers and their families.

This recognition strengthens Honduras' position as an innovative agricultural producer, capable of blending quality, research, and social commitment in its fruit development.
