Asparagus, avocado and strawberry prices rise across US markets

Supplies and pricing across key imported and domestic fruit and vegetable categories remain mixed as seasonal transitions, weather disruptions, and shifting harvest volumes influence trade activity and wholesale prices.

Asparagus
Asparagus movement from Peru through Southern California ports is expected to increase, with trading fairly active and prices higher. Eleven-pound cartons of bunched green jumbo are mostly US$45.75–47.75, extra-large US$46.75–47.75, large US$36.75–38.75, standard US$33.75–34.95, and small US$28.75–31.75. White large are US$48.75–50.75.

Avocado
Mexican avocado movement through Texas is expected to remain steady, though trading is fairly slow. Conventional 48s are higher, while others are slightly lower. Hass carton 2-layer 32s are mostly US$34.25–35.25, 36s US$26.25–30.25, 40s US$24.25–25.25, 48s US$25.25–26.25, 60s US$21.25–23.25, 70s US$20.25–22.25, and 84s US$19.25–21.25. Organic 48s are US$36.25–38.25.

Blueberry
Peruvian blueberry imports through Miami, Philadelphia, and New York are expected to increase as the season progresses. Trading is very active, and prices are slightly lower at US$38.00–40.00 for flats of twelve 1-pint cups with lids. Quality is generally good. Mexican supplies are limited due to rain and wet fields, with the first F.O.B. report expected the week of October 26.

Cucumber
Mexican cucumber movement through Texas is increasing slightly, with prices much higher. One 1/9-bushel cartons of medium are mostly US$16.95–18.95, large US$18.95–20.95, and fair to ordinary quality US$10.95–15.95. Quality and condition are variable. Movement through Otay Mesa, California, is decreasing, while Nogales, Arizona, will see seasonal increases. South Georgia trading is fairly active, with medium mostly US$14.35 and fair quality US$6.35–7.35.

Green bell pepper
Movement from South Georgia is increasing seasonally, with prices mostly US$10.35–11.35 for jumbo and extra-large and US$6.35–8.35 for fair quality. Mexican movement through Nogales, Arizona, is also set to increase, while California's Coachella Valley harvest begins the week of October 19.

Strawberry
California strawberry production is down slightly as rain and wet fields limit harvest. Prices are much higher at US$20.00–22.00 for 8-pound flats; organics range from US$24.00–28.00. Similar conditions are reported in Oxnard and Salinas-Watsonville. Mexican supplies are low, with the first F.O.B. report due October 26.

Tomato
Tomato movement from Mexico through Texas is increasing slightly, with prices higher. Vine Ripes 4x4–4x5 are mostly US$13.95–15.95, and 5x5–5x6 are US$12.95–13.95. In California's Central District, 25-pound loose Mature Greens are US$10.35 for large and extra-large and US$8.35–9.35 for medium. Movement from Alabama and the Eastern U.S. is increasing, with good quality and active trading.
