"We started to load garlic from cold storage, allowing us to ship good quality"

The Egyptian garlic campaign continues with shipments out of cold storage. Prices are at their highest of the season for Category I, amid strong demand and calm competition, according to Mohamed Shaaban, CEO of Garlico.

"We started on August 15 to load garlic from cold storage since early June, allowing us to ship good quality this far in the season. The season will continue until October 15, and it will be difficult to source good-quality garlic as we approach the end," says Shaaban.

Demand has been "very high" throughout the season, according to the exporter, particularly in the US, Taiwan, and Brazil markets. He adds, "Prices are currently average for category II and very high for category I. Prices for both categories are higher than in May and June, the peak shipping period, but remain lower than last season thanks to greater supply."

"Competition has been fairly calm throughout the season, thanks to a marked improvement in quality that has allowed us to work with peace of mind," Shaaban continues.

The Egyptian garlic season began in the second week of February with volumes exceeding those of last season, following the usual pattern of alternating high and low years. "The increase in garlic acreage is spectacular this year, I would say it has even doubled," Shaaban says.

A marked improvement in weather conditions has contributed to a high-quality crop, according to the exporter. "We haven't had any fog or heavy rain. Around half of the production is made up of large sizes, good for retail, and the other half of small sizes suitable for processing," he concludes.
