A Colombian court has sentenced seven former executives of Chiquita Brands to prison and $3.4 million in fines. The executives, including American Charles Dennis Keiser, were found guilty of "aggravated conspiracy," linked to crimes during Colombia's conflict in Uraba from 1990 to 2004. The company was accused of funding the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), a right-wing paramilitary group.
A U.S. court had previously established a fund for civil war victims in 2024. EarthRights, an NGO involved in the case, stated that a jury found Chiquita liable for financing AUC activities. The jury awarded $38.3 million to the families of eight victims.
