The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (Midagri), through the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA), has introduced INIA 106 Concepción, a new artichoke variety, in the Junín region.
The aim is to boost the profitability of small and medium-sized farmers by over 40%. This variety produces more than 15 tons per hectare, has a high multiplication rate that makes it easy to propagate in the field, and is resistant to the main pests and diseases affecting this crop.

Additionally, it adapts well to different climatic, topographic, and management conditions. It is especially suitable for the Peruvian highlands. Its design includes spines, which provide unique handling and protection features. It has the potential to enhance production in challenging environments, offering farmers a resilient and adaptable option.
Thanks to these traits, the INIA 106 Concepción artichoke variety, developed by the Santa Ana Agricultural Experimental Station (EEA Santa Ana), serves as a viable option for farmers seeking to increase productivity, conserve soil, and improve food security.
This new variety results from research led by INIA's Santa Ana Agricultural Experimental Station. Researchers collected species in 2016 from the towns of Alayo, Santa Ana, San Jerónimo, and Comas, then identified, adapted, and tested their efficiency in the designated environments.
