Last week, Skylar Rae® white cherries from Italy entered the Hong Kong market for the first time, and the initial batch of supplies quickly sold out. According to Kevin Au Yeung, head of the Asian market at RK Growers Srl, the variety will launch in the Singapore market this week, continuing its expansion into Asian sales channels.
"Skylar Rae originated in Wenatchee, Washington, USA, and was discovered by accident in the orchard of the Toftness family," Kevin said. "This variety has gradually gained attention in the high-end fruit market thanks to its touching origin story and unique flavor." Currently, Skylar Rae (variety name: TIP TOP) has been introduced from the United States to Italy by the Rivoira Group, which holds the exclusive planting rights for the variety in Europe.
Skylar Rae is known for its high sugar content and crisp texture, boasting a sugar level between 23 and 25 degrees. Kevin noted, "This variety offers a rich, sweet flavor, firm flesh, and a vibrant color. It has been positioned as one of the top white cherry varieties in the Hong Kong market."
According to Kevin, the Rivoira Group has set a planting target of 400 hectares. As of 2024, 25 hectares have been planted, and the 2025 yield has already surpassed 20,000 kilograms. It is projected that by 2028, annual production will reach 150,000 kilograms, with 70% destined for export and the remaining 30% supplied to Italian supermarkets. The variety is available in Italy from June through mid-July each year.
"Hong Kong and Singapore are our two key entry markets in Asia this season," Kevin stated. "These markets demand the highest standards in product quality and packaging. Although the price of Skylar Rae cherries is significantly higher than that of ordinary cherries, their exceptional sweetness, crisp texture, and attractive two-toned appearance have quickly won over consumers."
Kevin also shared that buyers from mainland China, Thailand, and Vietnam have shown strong interest in the variety. "The Asian market is becoming more open to high-quality, differentiated fruits, especially those that offer a unique combination of quality and storytelling. I believe Skylar Rae holds great potential in Asia."
As the first Italian fresh fruit company to introduce Italian-grown Skylar Rae white cherries to the Asian market, RK Growers Srl, in partnership with the Rivoira Group, is setting a new trend in premium fruit. "Skylar Rae white cherries are not just a delight to the palate—they embody the essence of quality, innovation, and the spirit of modern agriculture," Kevin concluded.
