Official start of the season at the Merz organic farm

In 2024, 22 percent of all German carrots were grown on organic land

Carrots are now available fresh from local farms again. At the start of the season, the team from meine-Möhren.de visited Hubert Merz in Baden-Württemberg, a dedicated Bioland producer who grows carrots organically in harmony with nature.

Hubert Merz has been passionately growing over 30 crops, including carrots, on his Bioland farm in Neulußheim since 1991. The organic carrots are washed and processed at the associated packing facility, Merz-Biogemüse. "Our field is alive," he says proudly. And you can see that: There is a buzzing and chirping among the carrots, as numerous insects and birds, and a colorful variety of weeds make the field a small natural paradise. This lively diversity enlivens nature and is therefore also good for the soil, water, and air. More and more carrots in Germany are now organically grown: In 2024, 22 percent of all German carrots were grown on organic land, and the trend is rising.

Fresh carrots back in stores across Germany
Thanks to the early high temperatures in spring, sowing could take place particularly early this year. Now, at harvest time, the carrots are coming straight from the field to the shops – regional, seasonal, and full of flavor. And not just in Neulußheim and the surrounding area, but throughout the country. In the south, the season typically starts a little earlier than in the slightly cooler north of Germany. Organic carrots usually need a little more time than the conventional variety. However, rain would be good for all plants right now because, in the current heat, they require a lot of water, just like us. Until winter, the carrots will now come directly from the field to the table. Thereafter, cold storage facilities will ensure that they are still available during the cold season.
