The Jammu railway division has received its first VP indent from Katra station to Bandra in Mumbai, scheduled for June 3. This development marks an initial initiative for transporting perishable goods beyond Jammu and Kashmir.
In collaboration with the Horticulture Department and fruit grower associations, this endeavor aims to facilitate the movement of goods like cherries, minimizing potential quality degradation. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Northern Railway, Jammu, Uchit Singhal, stated, "24 tons of cargo will be moved in a VP attached to a goods train from Katra station to Bandra station in Mumbai, and the cargo will reach its destination in 30 hours."
This logistical move is anticipated to benefit both railways and fruit growers, with broader economic implications for the J&K region. The strategy seeks to streamline the supply chain of perishable produce to key markets.
