Between January and March, the country imported 3,216 tonnes of cabbage worth $416,590, with nearly 99% of the volume originating from Iran, followed distantly by Russia and Turkey, according to data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia. During the reporting period, Russia exported 21 tonnes of cabbage worth $3,350, while Turkey supplied 13.96 tonnes worth $8,160.
Specifically, Georgia imported 3,181 tonnes of cabbage from Iran, valued at $404,520. This represents an almost 70-fold increase compared to the same period in 2024, when imports from Iran totaled just 46.5 tonnes, worth $6,960. During that time, Georgia's total cabbage imports stood at 63.84 tonnes.
Despite the volume spike, the average price per kilogram of imported cabbage has decreased significantly. In early 2025, the average import price fell to approximately $0.13 per kg, down from $0.24 per kg in the first quarter of 2024.
In contrast, in local supermarket chains, the retail price for 1 kg of cabbage reaches up to $0.74, indicating a wide markup at the consumer level and a possible gap in domestic supply chain efficiency.
Moreover, cabbage ranked among the top ten food items with the highest annual price growth in April 2025. According to Geostat, retail prices for cabbage increased by 60.58% year-over-year that month.
