A.P. Moller - Maersk has begun deploying its next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity platform, OneWireless, across 450 vessels in its fleet. This includes all Maersk-owned ships and over 100 time-chartered vessels. The system aims to enhance real-time data transmission and improve digital capabilities across its operations.
The OneWireless platform is designed to support thousands of onboard IoT devices, enabling real-time cargo monitoring, increased data granularity, and improved fleet efficiency. According to Kjeld Dittmann, Head of Vessel and Cargo Connectivity at Maersk, the platform upgrade will enhance current reefer tracking capabilities by shifting from 2G to 4G infrastructure, allowing for more frequent data updates and operational insights.
This upgrade is expected to improve supply chain visibility and support the use of advanced wireless technologies, including NB-IoT, Cat-M, and LTE broadband. The system also supports both private and public network interoperability, allowing cargo to be tracked consistently whether at sea, in port, or on land. It is designed to accommodate customer-provided IoT systems, provided they follow recognized standards.
Maersk has collaborated with several technology providers in developing the platform, including Onomondo, Nokia, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa. The roll-out, which involves onboard hardware installations, will be conducted during scheduled port calls and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.
