Technology plays a crucial role in ensuring quality and efficiency in the increasingly competitive agribusiness landscape. The Finnish company GRANLIDS APPEL has decided to invest in this progress, choosing the ICOEL-TOMRA technology for pre-grading and packing apples in their new warehouse located in the Åland archipelago. This choice is not only a step towards logistical optimisation, but also represents a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in the final product.

"All this is made possible thanks to the use of Spectrim LUCAi and Inspectra2, the latest generation of artificial intelligence-based machine learning technology, Tomra's patented 'machine learning' platform for non-destructive analysis of internal defects in apples (typically browning and vitrescence). The main objectives for the customer were both to solve the chronic labour shortage problem by automating processes as much as possible (from the packing of apples to the automatic distribution of empty packages, including palletising) and to be able to pack ever increasing volumes of apples whilst guaranteeing consistent high quality to Finnish and Swedish retail customers," explains Icoel's Bruno Stravato.

The key to this transformation is LUCAi, an advanced sorting platform based on artificial intelligence. "The market is significantly recognising the added value of LUCAi. This technology not only automates processes by reducing the need for labour, but also improves product quality. The adoption of the platform has led to tangible results, as evidenced by a customer in the citrus fruit sector who experienced zero complaints for its processed goods."
LUCAi, which initially focused on cherries and apples, has expanded its applicability to citrus fruit, allowing producers to further raise their quality standards. "This evolution results in a higher quality of the end product, which benefits the entire supply chain right up to the consumers," the spokesman emphasises. The company is also engaged in the testing phase, in order to extend its application to other types of fruit.

The collaboration with FOODIN in Greece represents a further step in the expansion strategy. "This new collaboration stems from the need to expand our customer portfolio in Greece. FOODIN, with its extensive experience in the Greek market, will guarantee a strong commercial presence and an efficient technical assistance service, crucial for the replacement of old mechanical systems with the latest electronic ones."
Finally, participation at Macfrut will be an opportunity to present LUCAi's potential and the company's expertise when it comes to tailor-made plants. "We will be delighted to welcome you to Hall D5, Stand 077," announces Icoel's managing director, stressing how, thanks to a solid fifty-year presence in the sector, the company is considered a reliable and avant-garde partner for automation and quality control in the agri-food industry.
