South Africa faces Stage 6 load shedding as Eskom works to restore power

The recent briefing by South Africa's Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, alongside Eskom executives, addressed the current load-shedding situation. With Stage 6 load shedding implemented as of early Sunday morning, the Minister expressed confidence that the crisis would be resolved by the week's end. He emphasized that load shedding should be considered "extremely abnormal" and assured that conditions would return to normal shortly.

Eskom CEO Dan Marokane provided insights into the recent setbacks, attributing the situation to the loss of multiple units at Majuba and Camden power stations. Out of ten units lost overnight, six have been restored. The CEO detailed that the loss at Majuba stemmed from an overload on a transformer, which initiated a domino effect. Efforts to bring additional units back online are ongoing, with a focus on system design improvements to prevent future occurrences.

The Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by the country, emphasizing the commitment to eradicating load shedding. Apologizing for the setbacks, he reiterated the government's dedication to resolving the issue, guided by the Energy Action Plan outlined in July 2022. The Minister clarified that the current situation is a technical issue, with no evidence of sabotage.
