Strong strawberry volumes ahead post-California rains

Even following last week's rains in the region, the supply of strawberries from southern California is good. "We have been cleaning up the fields after recent rains. They slowed production in the last couple of weeks in southern California but overall we are on track for expected volume," says Michelle Deleissegues of Gem-Pack Berries, LLC, noting that the strawberry season did start slightly later this year, but not significantly so.

Right now, picking is taking place in Irvine/Orange County and Oxnard, California but also in Florida, Central and Baja Mexico. "Santa Maria, California is not picking but they were cleaning up fields last week post rains to prepare to start shipping in approximately two weeks," adds Deleissegues.

No waver in demand
As for demand, it has been strongly consistent. "Consumption has not slowed on berries. Consumers are keenly aware of berries' health benefits and the value of nutrient-dense fresh product," she says.

All of this has left winter pricing moderately higher than a year ago. "However it is lower right now compared to two weeks ago and the Valentine's Day pull," says Deleissegues.

Looking ahead, she expects strong volume from southern California, Florida, and Baja in the weeks ahead. She also adds that while escalated weather conditions have been a challenge this season, border politics is another concern.
