"I think with the changes we have seen in weather patterns we need to have more origins"

Colina Fruit specializes in soft fruit, with blueberries as its flagship product. The company offers a year-round supply of blueberries from South America, Zimbabwe, and Morocco. Europe, and Eastern Europe with exciting developments in supply from countries such as Poland, Georgia, Romania, and Bulgaria, the team at Colina Fruit talks about how the market is at the moment.

Sean: "At the moment we are in transition between supply countries, and there is a good availability of blueberries. There is good fruit coming from Morocco but it is still expensive, the majority on the market at the moment is coming from Chile. South Africa has just finished, the fruit from there lasted longer than expected."

Quality vs price
Carlos: "Chilean blueberries have their price point, it is a good product but does need to be graded on arrival, obviously product which is grown closer to the market will arrive with better quality. Peru is well known for its quality production of Blueberry and remains a key player in the global market."

Damian: "We don't do South African blueberries, but we have had some from Zimbabwe and the fruit is good. They have good varieties and good quality. I think with the changes we have seen in weather patterns we need to have more origins."

Unseasonal weather in Spain
Gonzales: "We have seen some very bad weather in Spain recently, but this won't affect Spanish production. Blueberries are a global product, but those that only spend 2-3 days in transit will always be better quality than those that have been in a container for four weeks. We are just at the start of the Spanish season, it will peak during March, April, and May. The rain we had in the autumn will not affect this as the fruit is still to come. Spain is changing to better varieties and have early, mid, and late season fruit."

Global demand
Sean: "Global demand for blueberries is always increasing, and supply from new source countries such as Zimbabwe is increasing and the quality is good as is that from the Eastern European countries. Blueberries are now up there with strawberries, they are a staple.

Will: "Blueberries are now a commodity and are available 12 months a year, the taste and appearance are consistent through the year. Demand is always there and the more accessible they are the more popular they become.

Colina's values
Damian: "We are not growers, we focus on the commercial side, but we are working in the right partnerships believe in transparency, and put the grower's best interests first. We work closely with the growers and have trusted partnerships and customers have responded well to that, this is why we are successful and people have reacted well to that.

"We have team members in Spain, England, and Scotland so we can visit growers and customers. Being on the ground means that we can maneuver quickly and know our markets well."

Daniel and Carlos will be attending Fruit Logistica in Berlin and are happy to make appointments in advance.
