End-of-year festivities boosted Medjool sales

Sales of Medjool dates have long been rhythmed by the Islamic calendar, as exporters and retailers achieve a large proportion of their annual sales in the run-up to the month of Ramadan. Recently, however, medjool dates have found their way to a wider consumer base, with sales even increasing over the Christmas and New Year period. This is according to Ramadan Sayyad, Export Manager at Palm Hills Dates.

The exporter shares, "The end-of-year season is a time for holiday shopping, which boosts the consumption of many products that can be considered 'festive foods', such as fruits appropriate for festive gatherings. We've noticed that Medjool dates have been invited to the table this year, thanks to their high value and attractive aesthetic appearance."

"Although not linked to Islamic celebrations, where dates have dietary and religious significance, the end-of-year period prompts increased consumer spending, social gatherings, and a willingness to try gourmet treats," Ramadan continues.

According to the exporter, the month of Ramadan, the end of the year, and other special dates are all good opportunities to promote the variety. He adds, "We need to invite consumers to discover this festive use of Medjool dates. We make sure that the packaging is eye-catching, and offer various presentations of the dates, for example, stuffed with nuts or chocolate, in addition to discounts and promotions."

The surge in consumption was recorded in several markets according to Ramadan. "This is especially the case in North America, Europe, and the Gulf countries. We have also recorded that supermarkets and online sales are the main channels that have experienced this surge in demand."

"There are different ways to market Medjool dates: it's a beautiful, premium, delicious, and nutritious fruit. It's a healthy snack that can also be offered as a gift or presented on the table on special occasions for all cultures," Ramadan concludes.
