According to data from the first 9 months of 2023 offered by the Argentine Chamber of Integrated Fruit Growers (CAFI), there's been a notable growth in apple and pear exports from Río Negro and Neuquén to Brazil.
Specifically, pear shipments amounted to 112,592 tons, increasing by 54% over the same period of the previous year, while apple shipments increased by 50% to 19,343 tons. Brazil concentrated almost 40 and 30% of Argentina's pear and apple exports, respectively, in that period.
According to information from the Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA), in the first nine months of the year, shipments to Brazil totaled just over 131,900 tons, i.e. 53% more than in the same period of last year and 36% more than the average of the last five seasons (2018-2022).
According to the business sector, this increase mainly happened because there has been a sustained demand and because the exchange rate was very competitive for Argentine exports during most of the season.
However, despite this positive context, the prices declared by the companies (values placed in frontier-FOB) for this destination stood at an average of 0.66 dollars per kilo, i.e. 4% lower than in the previous year and 6% lower than the pear's average FOB value to all markets.
Meanwhile, according to the companies, the average apple FOB price in the first nine months of the year stood at 0.89 dollars per kilo; that is 35% higher than pear prices this season and 27% higher than the consolidated average for all apple exports during 2023.
