According to a report that was recently made public, the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) has authorized the sale of Hortifrut shares to the 14602889 Canada Inc. company, which gives it control in Peru of HFE Berries and Hortifrut Peru. As detailed in the report, Indecopi authorized the sale after concluding that this business concentration operation does not generate serious concerns about an eventual restriction of competition in the domestic market.
This means that Hortifrut Peru and HFE Berries have merged their shares in the marketing of blueberries for internal consumption. In 2022, these companies had a 17.05% and a 6.48% share, respectively, and together they contributed 23.53% of the blueberries marketed in the national market, according to information from Indecopi.
They were followed by Camposol with an 8.75% share, Agrovision Peru (8.27%), Beta (7.32%), Cerro Prieto (5.58%), Agroberries Peru (5.07%), and more than 70 companies that together account for 41.48% of the market.
It's worth noting the role that supermarkets have in Hotifrut's national sales. The company reported that it went from selling 500 kilos of blueberries on average a week in the country's supermarkets in 2019 to marketing 7,500 kilos a week in 2022.
Peru's second-largest blueberry exporter
According to the Agrodata portal, last year Hortifrut ranked was the second-largest exporter of blueberries in Peru, with shipments worth 143.4 million dollars. Camposol ranked first, with exports worth 232.9 million.
