Peru will start exporting turmeric and aguaymanto to the US in 2023

According to the Update Report of the 2023-2026 Macroeconomic Projections (IAPM), more than a dozen agro-export products with high potential whose shipments grew by more than 100% between 2007 and 2022 have been identified.

One of these products is onions. In 2021 alone, Peru was the 11th biggest onion exporter in the world (1.1% share in agro exports and with an average 9.1% growth between 2018 and 2022), given the greater demand from the United States, and European countries, which led to an increase in export prices.

Other products include pomegranate, ginger (with a boom in 2020 due to COVID-19), mandarins (with a 2% share in agro-exports; 2018-2022), pineapples, lime, and garlic.

A new destination for aguaymanto and turmeric
However, the growth in agro exports is closely related to the opening of new markets. According to the table published in the IAPM, aguaymanto and turmeric will enter the US market this year so the country could increase its exports of these products.

Between January and November 2022, Peru exported 46 tons of aguaymanto; 93% of which corresponded to the dehydrated product and 7% to fresh. “For the past 10 years, shipments of dehydrated aguaymanto have bordered US$2 million, and they haven't grown because it has a limited market. We'll notice an increase when we open the US market, but we must take into account that the main consumer will be the Latino community. There is a lack of promotion effort to publicize the fruit,” stated agribusiness specialist Angel Manero.

Turmeric local producers seek to differentiate themselves with an organic supply. According to Freshfruit data, 70% of the turmeric Peru exports is of this quality. Despite this, in 2022 Peru exported 15% less volume than in 2021.

“It is important to mention that there are opportunities to continue positioning our country's agro-export products in the world, given the climate change issues that affect many traditional food suppliers, but which in turn represent a window of opportunity for Peru, as well as the country's supply availability and the measures to boost the agro-export sector contemplated in the National Strategic Export Plan to 2025 (PENX 2025) of the Ministry of Tourism and in the National Competitiveness and Productivity Plan (PNCP),” the government stated in the aforementioned Report.
