The European market for butternut squash is very short at the moment due to a lower supply from Portugal and Spain, the season will also finish earlier than normal.

“The European market has been short all season, especially with retail sizes,” said Daniel Badger, Managing Director at Vita Fresh Produce. “Normally the supply would last until April, but this year it will end very early. Vita Fresh hope to fill this gap with butternut from South Africa. It should arrive on the European market by mid to late February.”

Vita Fresh have invested in a farm in South Africa to grow butternut squash and have exclusivity to supply the European market.

“We are looking at bringing up to 70 containers into Europe this season, we will stop shipping in June when the European supply starts again.”
