Chinese ports boost container volumes

Chinese ports have handled 270.6 million TEUs from January to November 2022, which represents a 4.2% increase compared with the same period in 2021.

Additionally, in the first 11 months of 2022, the following Chinese ports reported over 14.3 billion tons, translating to a slight year-on-year growth of 0.7%. The chart below shows the cargo throughput and container throughput data of the twelve major ports in China.

As seen in the table, the port of Shanghai has maintained its dominance, being the busiest container port in the country with 43.19 million TEUs. The port of Ningbo & Zhoushan is the second busiest box port in China with 31.26 million TEUs, achieving a noteworthy year-on-year growth of 7.8%. In the third place, we find the port of Shenzhen with 26.84 million TEUs, translating to a year-on-year increase of 2.3%.

Furthermore, the largest percentage growths were registered at the ports of Yinkou, Dalian, Beibu Gulf and Rizao. Both Yinkou and Dalian reported year-on-year container growth of 19.9%, while Beibu Gulf and Rizao achieved 15.7% and 13.8% container volume increases, respectively.
