Brussels sprouts supply continues to be steady, with current supplies more ample than they were in previous years. “Our Brussels sprouts crop had some challenges with moisture a few weeks back due to a few days of rain we received at the beginning of the month. However, it’s not anything major and overall this season has had great supply and quality with very few issues,” says Crystal Chavez of Gold Coast Packing.
Supplies are largely shipping out of the Santa Maria Valley along with some volume from Monterey County. In January, the Mexican growing season is expected to begin.
Growing demand for Brussels
Meanwhile demand continues to grow for the vegetable. “That growth in popularity has created a greater demand for Brussels sprouts. It’s becoming a staple vegetable in restaurants and with home chefs too. As it continues to grow it will be a year-round vegetable for consumers and not just a ‘holiday vegetable’,” says Chavez.
In turn, growers have responded by planting more Brussels sprouts or adding it as a new item to their lineup. “This year there is an increase in demand but there is more supply available than in years past,” says Chavez.
As for pricing, it’s lower at this time of year because of that ample availability. “It did have an uptick for the holiday pull but it was a bit lower than previous years,” says Chavez.
