“We extended the shelf-life of cherries to 42 days”

Using an IoT sensor that communicates with the FreshSens AI platform can inform traders about the shelf-life of their stored produce, says FreshSens CEO Baran Baykurt Emiroglu. "I think everybody has bought some fruit and found out that some of them went bad faster than the others in the same bunch. This isn't any different when fruits are sitting in storage. With FreshSens, we combine CA modules with an IoT sensor that predicts the remaining shelf-life of the fruits. We ran trials with 2.000 kilos of cherries last summer, and we now continue with 7.000 kilos of pomegranates. The sensors inside the module monitor and predict the fruit's remaining shelf-life."

After using FreshSens, Emiroglu states that they could double or even triple the shelf-life of the cherries, which in turn led to higher profits for the Turkish traders. "Thanks to our prediction model that we released this summer, we were able to store cherries for 42 days, which means we extended the shelf-life by two to three times as much than the usual. For Turkish traders, this meant they could double their profits, as prices in July sat at 1 euro, while 30 days later, prices had doubled or even tripled due to lower supply. So being able to store the cherries for longer nets a trader more profit on their product, depending on the market situation."

FreshSens boasts a 90% accuracy for determining when a product will lose its freshness; Emiroglu explains: "As a company, we sell the hardware required, as well as provide the AI software solution. For our clients, it's effortless; they order what they need and get all the support they need from us. Sometimes that even means training their people on-site. It works for our business model, as our software comes with a paid subscription. Clients have been pretty happy, and our prediction model has been 90% accurate when predicting the remaining shelf-life. The 10% originates from issues arising during or even before harvesting and can't be attributed to the storing method. However, we have plans in the future to solve this too."

Although FreshSens is mainly marketed for Turkish companies at the moment, Emiroglu feels they'll have enough opportunities to branch out in 2023: "For now, we're mostly focused on the Turkish market, as Turkey is the largest cherry producer and also grows large volumes of pomegranates, which is what we've tested FreshSens for so far. However, next year we also see opportunities to expand in Uzbekistan, Greece, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, and Ukraine. For 2023 we're also running trials to see what FreshSens can do for other fruits, such as blueberries, grapes, and asparagus."

"Fruit Logistica has invited us to display our product during Start-up Day on the 10th of February. We hope everyone will come to find out how FreshSens can keep their produce fresh for longer!"
