In 2021, the United States was the world's largest importer of vegetables. The North American country imported 13.488 billion dollars worth of vegetables, increasing its purchases by 5.5% over the previous year.
US vegetable imports were led by tomatoes ($2.912 billion), cucumbers and gherkins ($1.045 billion), and onions and garlic ($820 million), among other products.
The US was followed by Germany with 8.306 billion dollars, i.e. 9.7% more purchases than in 2020. The most imported products were tomatoes ($1.686 billion), cucumbers and gherkins ($740 million), and lettuce ($488 million).
The United Kingdom ranked third with imports worth 3.896 billion dollars and a 2.1% year-on-year drop. British vegetable imports were led by tomatoes ($621 million), onions and garlic ($284 million), and cabbages and cauliflowers ($279 million).
Other outstanding vegetable importers were France with 3.896 million dollars and an 8% increase over the previous year, and Canada with 3.054 billion and a 9.3% decrease over 2020.
