Global fresh fruit and vegetable production stabilizes

According to the latest data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the world produced 1,837 million tons of fruits and vegetables in 2019, i.e. 0.8% more than in the previous year but slightly less than two years before, which shows that production has stabilized.

According to the official data of the last five years, there's been little change in the world production of fresh fruits and vegetables. In 2015, production amounted to 1.8 billion tons. It increased to 1.824 million tons in 2016 and to 1.852 million tons in 2017. In 2018 there was a slight 1.7% decline.

Since 2015, the ranking of the main fresh fruit and vegetable producing countries has also remained stable. China is the leading producer with 694 million tons, accounting for 40% of the total, which is mainly dedicated to supplying the local population. It is followed by India with 197 million tons, i.e. 11% of the total, which are also mainly allocated to domestic consumption.

The United States ranks third with 66 million tons. It is followed by Turkey, with 50 million tons; Brazil, with 46 million tons; Russia, with 38 million tons; Mexico, with 36 million tons, Spain and Ukraine, with 31 million tons each. Egypt ranked tenth with 30 million tons, according to FAOSTAT data processed by FEPEX.
