In Pune’s retail market, pomegranates now cost between Rs 300 to 400 per kg (€3.60-4.80), depending on the size and quality of the fruit. The demand-supply mismatch resulting from damage to the crops caused by the rains in August has pushed up the prices. Till very recently, they were about Rs80-100 per kg.
In the wholesale market, the price goes further up by the time it reaches the retail outlets where the buyers feel the pinch. In July, the price of pomegranate had fallen drastically as it was auctioned for Rs60-80 per kg in the wholesale market and the price in local retail markets was in the range of Rs100-160 per kg.
According to timesofindia.indiatimes.com, pomegranates are currently costlier than apples in the wholesale and retail markets. A box containing 15kg of Jammu & Kashmir apples was being auctioned in the range of Rs1,000-Rs 1,400. Similarly, a box of apples, containing 25kg, was sold between Rs700- Rs 2,000.
