Malaysian fruit hawkers price their durians based on the car you drive

Durian lovers might want to consider leaving their car at home when purchasing their favorite tropical delights, as some fruit sellers are reportedly basing their prices on the kind of car you drive.

According to the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP), durian sellers are doing ‘rich boy checks’, charging customers based on what kind of car they drive. Pahang’s KPDNHEP Chief Ahmad Fitri Ali explains that sellers would “up” their prices two to three times more if a customer pulls up in an expensive vehicle.

For now, the KPDNHEP says that it’s keeping a close watch over merchants and businesses to keep them from taking advantage of consumers. Generally, fruit sellers can get into serious trouble if they fail to display prices or are caught using unauthorized weight scale machines.

Therakyatpost.com reports that despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, both local and international demand for durians continues to be on the rise.
