Peru's avocado reaches South Korea's largest supermarket chain

Emart, the most important supermarket chain in South Korea, will be the retailer that will distribute and sell fresh Peruvian avocado for the first time in the country. The Peruvian Promotion Commission for Export and Tourism (PromPeru) stated that the country's avocado started to be marketed on June 4 at the Emart branch located in Seoul, the capital of South Korea and that it would start being marketed in all of Emart's Korean subsidiaries in late June.

The export of Hass avocado to the Asian country has been possible thanks to the phytosanitary protocol approved by the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency of South Korea (APQA). In addition, due to the FTA reached by Peru and South Korea in 2013, this product doesn't have to pay any tariffs in the Korean market.

The avocado is being promoted under the Super Foods Peru brand, created by PromPeru to position the Peruvian agricultural industry's products that have high nutritional values in the international markets.

The launch event was attended by the Peruvian ambassador to South Korea, Daul Matute-Mejia; the commercial economic advisor of PromPeru in South Korea, Erick Garcia; Emart's fresh produce manager, Myung-Kun Lee, and Emart's vice president of Global Sourcing, Sunkeun Lee.

Emart plans to sell Peruvian avocado from June to October, as its production season runs from May to September. South Korea thus becomes the thirty-third market that consumes Peruvian Hass avocado.
