The new production season for sweet potatoes has just begun on Hainan. Sweet potatoes have grown more popular in the Chinese market over the last few years. Many more farmers have therefore started planting sweet potatoes.
Mr. Yang Zhituo of Jia Tuo Agriculture recently shared his view on the conditions in the sweet potato industry at the start of this production season: "Our production volume is larger than last year. This is on the one hand because the weather has been stable all year round, and on the other hand because we expanded the surface area devoted to sweet potato plantation. The current production season officially began in January and is estimated to last until June. The market prospects are quite good this year. Sales conditions are smooth, in particular on e-commerce platforms. The current price is around 4.5 yuan [0.65 USD] per 0.5 kg."
"The price shows a steady upward trend. We still mainly sell our sweet potatoes to high-end markets. The domestic sweet potato is still considered an expensive variety."
"The weather conditions and the geographical position of Hainan are both extremely suitable for the production of our new sweet potato variety. Average temperatures on Hainan are around 20-25 ℃ and the quantity of rainfall is not bad either. The Ganshu sweet potato is a new variety our company developed and cultivated in cooperation with Hainan Agricultural Science Institute and the Hainan Tropical Science Institute. The skin of this new sweet potato variety is an exceptional bright red and the sugar content is quite high around 48."
"Our company has a sweet potato plantation on Hainan that covers an area of 40 hectares. We sell our products through traditional retail channels as well as e-commerce platforms. We mainly sell our sweet potatoes in wholesale markets, supermarkets, online shops, and community stores in large cities throughout China."
