Guatemala: Logistic and commercial corridor to connect Mexico and Central America

According to an official source, the administration of President Jimmy Morales is working to conclude the logistic and commercial corridor that connects the borders of Mexico with El Salvador, which is important for the country and Central America, this year.

The Executive aims to deliver all of route CA-2, which goes from the border of Tecun Uman (San Marcos) to the border city of Ciudad Pedro de Alvarado (Jutiapa), with completely new asphalt conditions in its East and West stretches in 2019," stated Jose Luis Benito, the Minister of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV), at a press conference.

This route "is a very important logistics corridor for Central America, and not only for Guatemala, since it connects the land trade with the north of the continent," he emphasized.

The highway that connects both borders has a midpoint in the department of Escuintla, where the most important port of the country is located, in the Pacific, he added.

To achieve this objective, four phases of the CA-2 East section, which runs from Escuintla to the Salvadoran border, have already been done while progress is being made in the recovery of the asphalt belt along the route that reaches the border of Tecun Uman.

The minister noted that the contracts that are being tendered for the road from Escuintla to the Pedro de Alvarado border include a six-month deadline for the execution of the work and a clause indicating that the term will not be extended.

"We hope to have those tranches finished by November, so we hope that the companies that compete will have the technical and financial capacity not to incur a breach of contract," said Benito.
